本片讲述了一个“吃亏书记”张国忠带领全村群众，自1949年至今，历经63年的历程，将一个“要饭村”转变成“小康村”的故事……。Centers on the Kilcher family and their community outside Homer, Alaska. Led by patriarch Atz Kilcher, singer Jewel's father, the family have lived on their land for three generations. The show also focuses on the homesteaders who live by the Kilchers, including, Brother Roadkill, who eats animals lying dead on the side of the road.。
