She deceives her husband and others in to believe their mother left rules for the family to follow in the lead up to Christmas. Wanting to believe their mother left some guidance to help heal the wounds of her abs...。玛蒂（克里斯汀·贝尔 Kristen Bell 饰）和男友乔什的关系最近有些疏远，她在多次电话联系无效后拜访乔什，但看到的却是男友自杀后的尸体……玛蒂陷入了自责，男友的幻象萦绕在她的眼前。不久，在玛蒂和朋友们使用网络聊天软件时，忽然传来了乔什的即时讯息，玛蒂怀疑有人在使用男友的电脑，委托朋友查看，这导致朋友在乔什家遭遇了恐怖的经历……另一方面玛蒂追索电脑下落，结识了购买电脑的青年德克斯特，后者在乔什电脑中发现了一系列诡异的视频，乔什在视频记录中自述其运用黑客技术释放出了恐怖的物事，而他自己已无法控制。玛蒂在周围人的自杀、失常中愈发体会到一场借助网络传播的恐怖阴云正迅速笼罩整个城市……。
