明治维新初期，淡路的稻田家遵循新政府的命令移居北海道，在恶劣的环境中努力开垦。当废藩置县的新政策传到此地后，家臣小松原带领大家接受命运，决心在那里建立属于自己的新家园。小松原为了寻求能在苦寒中生长的水稻前往札幌，但久久未归。妻子志乃带着女儿出发寻找丈夫，在大雪中体力不支倒下。五年后，被人所救的志乃和女儿一起经营着一个牧马场，辛劳度日。而政府不顾当地蝗灾之苦，要征收马匹用于战争，前来征马的政府官员竟然正是当年一去不回的小松原。志乃仍以妻子之礼相待，而已经改名换姓的小松原却已经另外组织了新家庭…。Jan and Gedda have been married to each other for a long time in the Beentjes of Sint-Hildegard.
