1836年1月9日皮埃尔·拉斯纳尔因为谋杀和偷窃而走上了断头台。之前在等待审判期间，他给警官阿拉尔写下了自己的回忆录。他还请求阿拉尔照顾艾尔米娜这个小姑娘，他做她的监护人已有十多年了。在影片的闪回中，在他自己所描写的监狱情况，还有阿拉尔和艾尔米娜读完回忆录后的调查，连同回忆录出版后其他人的反映，观众看到了拉斯纳尔的童年生活：先是做小流氓，然后是盗窃，第一次谋杀，第一次服兵役，接着引诱一位公主，还有与他有过风流史最后挨着他身边死去的一个青年男子阿弗里尔。。A wagon load of convicts on their way to prison is being escorted through the mountains by a cavalry troop. They are attacked by a bandit gang, and only a sergeant, his beautiful young daughter and an assortment of seven sadistic, murderous prisoners survive, and they are left without horses or a wagon.
