达摩，天竺人，禅宗二十八代佛祖。是把禅学带入中土的第一人。他为弘扬佛法东渡中土历尽艰辛，后终在少林寺后山面壁九年得悟大道和高深武艺。其经历充满传奇性和戏剧性。达摩到中国弘法大乘佛教之时，正值南北朝的分裂时代，社会治安极差，民心凋敝，原有的佛教教理偏重于追求个人名利，趋附权贵，造成世风日下，道德观念也愈来愈难以发挥制衡作用。达摩行医济世，遍施爱心，在下层百姓中广结善缘，引起共鸣。他救助了面临被焚噩运的麻疯女小婵，在日久相处中小婵对达摩由感激而生爱情，给修心性的达摩带来不小的历练。北魏国师流支三藏巧于言辞，善于为高官大户说经乞福，他以说法传扬自己，一时名声颇盛，因而对达摩的声誉鹊起心怀嫉恨，遂进谗言于南梁君主梁武帝，使梁武帝对达摩这个乐于厮混民间，不先至皇宫拜见的和尚产生很大误解。又加之达摩为救助病势沉重的小婵差点误了梁武帝的召见，听信身边佞臣之言的梁武...。West of Zanzibar is a 1928 film directed by Tod Browning about the vengefulness of a cuckolded magician (Lon Chaney) paralyzed in a brawl with his rival (Lionel Barrymore).
